CHAT!!!
My favorite word in the whole english language!!!!!!
Guess that you can call me a little Chatterbox! You know that there is something wrong with me
if i am not talking to at least three people at a time when I am connected to the net!!
Well I have done some reseach about the joys of chat and this is what I have come up with!!!!! Wouldn't it be cool if there were a place where
you could meet new people from all over the world and talk about anything
under the sun at anytime of the day or night? Well
such a place exhists. It is called an online chat room!!!! If you are a chat rookie, relax- you don't have
to be a techie to get started. Most major online services,
like America Online and CompuServe, and Web Sites, such as
MTV and Yahoo!, offer chat rooms that cover a wide range of interests.
Once you have joined an online service or an Internet Service Provider
and installed the basic software, you are all set! When you enter a chat room, your screen will display
a list of the people who are in the specific room as well as the conversation
in progress, which looks like a dialogue from a play. The speakers
names are written out followed by that they have said/typed. Since there
is usually more then one conversation going on at one time it is hard at
first to keep up. But no need to worry you will be chatting up a storm
in no time!!! What do people talk about?? Well that
varies. The good thing about chatting online is that since it is totally
anonymous, you can say just about anything. No one knows exactly
who you are so you can't be judged but the usual superficial standards.
It's one of the few places where how you express yourself is more important
then what you look like.
The Usual Suspects
The names of the chatrooms might be diffrent, but in everyone of them you are sure to encounter the following personalities.
The Boss aka The OPerator
The Boss tends to be a big enforcer of Netiqutte
(the online world's version of common courtesy) So if anyone in the room starts swearing or being
down right rude, rest is assured that the Boss will take the matters
in their own hands. The Boss is educated in everything to do
in a situation so if you have any questions or concerns then ask them they
are more then willing to help.
The Newbie aka Chatter
The Newbie is eager, friendly, and clueless. How to spot a newbies:
They often do goofy things like typing in all caps, which is concidered shouting and is really rude. Newbies must be
careful not to reveil too much information, especially to so called fishers
, who purposly chat up newbies to try and get them to give them their
online password, address, or phone and credit card numbers.
The anonymitiy of a chat room can be liberating,
but it is also deceiving. You never really know who you are dealing with.
So watch what kind of informaiton that you give out. But hey you
never know who you might run into.. you could find your soul mate our a
new best friend..
